MT: It is true that a significant portion of the funds are going to 401 k's IRA's but a lot of people are trading on margin. Electronic trading is booming. When things turn bad these folks will run for cover. The momentum oriented money managers will also sell, if you can get out faster than others you will always suffer less. Look at any of the momentum stocks that come down crashing, very frequently the best time to get out, once the fall has started is the first couple of days.

PS: My guess is that if the market does not cool down a bit before May 19 the fed will raise rates.
