California Beach Story:

Took the kids to the San Mateo Coast for some tide pooling and general messing around and taking in the sights today. We climbed down the cliff along the South bank of Pescadero Creek where it runs into the Pacific at this cool arch (this is our favorite tide pool area and we go there every couple of months). Well about 200 feet from the surf on the bank of the creek was this Sea Otter laying on his back in a couple of inches of water, all curled up and snoozing. Damn they're cute. A couple of girls were checking him out as we did too. He'd open an eye and look a bit but otherwise wasn't moving at all. I thought he might be sick as he just didn't seem to have the energy to react to humans being nearby. We were within inches of this guy. Since we noticed he was tagged, I took a stick and moved his tail enough that I could read his tag number 5002. He didn't even flinch. We climbed out and drove to a nearby Calif Dept of Forestry Fire Station to call a ranger and let them know they might have a sick otter. The Fireman there informed us that this was just the local otter and he often hung out there and people came by all the time to let them know about him. He also said he'd bite you if you touched him and that he had recently drowned a dog that tried to mess with him. Cute but tough! Gotta love'em......
