Brokers sell stock they don't own. They have a license and they can get away with it. Sometimes they even borrow the stock to short it. sometimes they don't bother. Why do you think brokerages go out of business occasionally when a stock hits the roof unexpectedly? Face a fact, brokerages make their living encouraging liquidity. They sell like crazy if they can find buyers. And that selling is frequently from them as principles. Sometimes they go out and buy the stock first. But if they don't they know 90% of the time they can get it the next day for less. Canaccord is pastmaster of the short promotion. They will sell a subscription 3 times over before the see share one.

If you don't believe in illegal shorts dominating the market then you probably do believe in a tooth fairy.
