Brief: Like the rest of the tech sector, networkers were mostly
weaker on Thursday, but none more so than 3Com...

Company took it on the chin as institutional investors growing
impatient with COMS turnaround plan...

Moreover, investors concerned that sales will continue to fall
amid competition from Cisco and other rivals...

During the day, Salomon Smith Barney executed a block trade of
6 mln shares...

DMG lowered its Q4 estimate on 3Com by 3 cents to $0.23 a share
and reduced its FY98 forecast from $0.73 to $0.66, citing
modem inventory issues...

Ascend and Fore Systems the other big losers in the group,
with each falling 1 5/16...

Cisco unable to extend its earnings-related gains, and fell 5/8...

Lehman Bros., though, reiterated its BUY rating stating that
lower routing sales were offset by good growth in LAN and WAN
switching, remote access, and services...

Set a price target of $85 based on 35X calendar 1999 EPS of
$2.35-$2.40 a share.
