Sylmar? Yup, that was a biggie! Do you remember the one that occurred one year later, to the day? Hardly anyone does. It was just one quick, nasty jolt.

I think what shocked us most with Sylmar was the widespread devastation when we thought our structures and freeways were pretty much impervious to damage from earthquakes. Two hospitals, one of them brand new, and a brand new freeway fell victim to that quake.

When Loma Prieta hit up here, we had been lulled into the same pattern of thinking or that at the least freeways and other structures built since 1971 were safe. Of course, we were wrong again.

Did they ever retrofit the 60-57 interchange down there? I heard that it was one of the least earthquake-worthy structures in the state. Ironically, it is one of the newest ones, and definitely new since Sylmar in 1971.
