Thanks Bob -- that's a great win by DiviCom. Lots of things for John R. in the press release -- Canal+, Pace, and Nokia.

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 7, 1998--

NDS Technology And Expertise Selected By NTL For UK Digital

Terrestrial Networks

NDS, the leading provider of end-to-end digital broadcasting systems, today announced that it has been awarded the world's largest digital terrestrial technology contract, worth over $40 million, by NTL for digital terrestrial TV (DTV) networks in the UK, due on-air later this year.

NDS will supply its System 3000 DTV video compression, modulating, multiplexing and transcoding solutions, as well as work closely with NTL to provide support through a five-year service contract.

The deal is the result of over a decade of pioneering research and development work by NDS and NTL in the field of digital terrestrial broadcasting using OFDM transmission technology. NDS has been selected by NTL, following NTL's win of two major contracts to construct and operate digital terrestrial TV networks for Digital 3 & 4 Ltd. and for S4C/Channel 5/SDN.

"The combination of Digital 3 & 4 and S4C/Channel 5/SDN represents the critical mass of UK digital terrestrial television and we are proud to be working with NTL to make the new digital age a reality for UK broadcasters and viewers," said Dr. Abe Peled, CEO of NDS Ltd. "This is the result of over ten years of hard work and commitment by our team. We have worked very closely with NTL and this win confirms that we have not only the best technology, but also the expertise to help our customers build the best solutions for digital terrestrial broadcasting. We look forward to building on this win to become the first choice in DTV technology and solutions among the many current DTV trials we are operating in worldwide."

"We wanted more than just a product supplier for these important contracts. We were looking for a true technology partner and an organization that totally understands digital terrestrial broadcasting. NDS fits the bill completely and is able to provide us with proven technology, helping to ensure that we will be able to meet the demands of these major contracts," said Peter Douglas, managing director NTL Broadcast.

NTL, NDS and UK digital terrestrial

In the UK, Digital Terrestrial Television (DTV) will be broadcast within the existing UHF television frequency bands using 2K OFDM carrier transmission. Six frequency channels with 24.13 Mbit/s data capacity are available for digital use in most areas of the country, each channel carrying a 'multiplex' of up to ten services. DTV signals can be received on conventional aerials with the addition of a small 'set-top' box. Four multiplex operator groups will provide digital terrestrial programming: Digital 3 & 4, S4C/Channel 5/SDN, BBC and BDB.

On March 25, 1998, NTL announced that it had been awarded two contracts worth $400 million for the construction and operation of digital terrestrial TV networks in the UK. These are the largest contracts ever won by NTL and are critical elements in the UK's digital terrestrial television services due on-air later this year.

For Digital 3 & 4 Ltd., which covers the UK's 16 Independent Televisions (ITV) companies and UK Channel 4, NTL will provide not only transmission but will be responsible for end-to-end system integration including all video compression and multiplexing systems. The second contract, for S4C Digital Networks, is for a complete 'turnkey' system including satellite distribution to the transmitter sites.

NTL has chosen NDS to provide all of the video compression, modulation, multiplexing and transcoding systems for the contracts, as well as awarding NDS a five year support contract.
