Yes, in fact the merger has nothing to do with the percentage ownership that Daimler has of BLD (20%). It doesn't change because Chrysler doesn't own any BLD. The fact is Ford also owns 15% of BLD and is in the PNGV. BLD has always been a Canadian (foreign) company and has been supplying fuel cells to the PNGV for years. BLD has prevailed in spite of the nationalistic efforts of the American auto companies to foster their own fuel cell technology.

So will they cut off their nose to spite their face? I don't think so. What this article also fails to mention is that in spite of the PNGV efforts, Daimler is still way ahead in fuel cells and has little need for the PNGV. If Ford remains active in the PNGV and continues to work on fuel cells with Daimler and BLD, is that also not a threat to the "secrets" of the PNGV? If you also get rid of Ford, the PNGV dies.

I think this merger will simply accelerate the introduction of fuel cells by increasing the potential market share and forcing the oil companies to provide the fuels needed.
