Maxer, RE: Netscape a company of altruists

But releasing the netscape source code puts them in a very different place.

Now ask why they did this? Why it makes business sense to give away something that they previous made money on?

Answer: Competition (aka Microsoft)

If Microsoft did not put pressure on Netscape in the free market, you would not have source code available.

MS has a number practices that I do not like. You mentioned a few. Your first point is almost meaningless because it is a common industry practice to snipe talent from other companies. How does one steal a volunteer?

Microscoft actively steals employees who have valuable trade secretes.
If that person is so valuable than you can put them under an employment contract to keep them at your company. Otherwise they are free to move with the cash flow. This does not mean that they are free divulge 'trade secrets'.

IMO,

Chris
