Ian- use consumer portable as floppy equivalent?

Anybody else have a PalmPilot with two cradles? With two cradles, you can transport files.

If you have a "consumer portable" aka Bmate aka SuperEmate aka...etc. that has an IR port on it (as it surely will), you can transfer data to your Bmate, then Bmate to wherever- another desktop, a friend's Bmate, color dye sublimation printer at Kinkos, etc- just by showing them to each other.

This reminds me of how I like a Martini- just show the gin the bottle of vermouth- the transformation is made.

Ian,

There is potential here for a new product to fill the sneaker net vacuum. A cheap IR handheld utilizing slim RAM cards would be super reliable, scaleable and just Jetsonesque to sell into the dorm room crowd with the iMac.

I have quite a few posts to read yet. Please excuse me if someone has already brought this up.

Ian: This guy votes a reluctant "yes." There isn't a straight line between my computer and printer, for example. There's a lot of junk in between. I think you need a clear visual field for the IR printing or other IR connections. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that.) I like the idea of IR and would appreciate the feature, but I'd be happy with cables given the chaos of my environment.

I think the machine will be a great success, but I personally want to be able to get floppy input when I need it. I don't mind the swappable that we have in the 3400, though it's hard to keep track of exactly where the swappables are when they aren't installed!
