True HDTV-upgradable TVs At Breakthrough Pricing Unveiled by Mitsubishi Consumer Electronics America; Consumers Can Plug Into Digital Era at Their Own Pace 05/08/98 Business Wire (Copyright (c) 1998, Business Wire) LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 8, 1998--Seven HDTV-upgradable products at breakthrough prices highlight the 1999 product line of Mitsubishi Consumer Electronics America Inc. (MCEA), which previewed a wide range of new home entertainment products today at its annual Dealer Line Show, held this year in Las Vegas. While HDTV broadcasting is eagerly awaited by consumers, MCEA is providing customers with seven super-high performance enhanced analog televisions upgradable to full 1080 interlaced (1080I) HDTV (1,080 vertical lines x up to 1,920 horizontal rows). The company's new line gives consumers the ability to upgrade from analog to digital reception at any time with MCEA's external HD-1080 HDTV Receiver, which was among the products demonstrated at the line show. The two new television series feature front projection sets with wide screens (16:9 ratio of width to height) and rear projection sets with the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio. Screen sizes range from 50 inches to 80 inches, with suggested retail starting at approximately $4,000. "Our 1999 lineup provides breakthrough performance for the new millennium of television and clearly positions MCEA as the company setting the benchmark for the industry," said Max Wasinger, vice president of sales and marketing for Mitsubishi Consumer Electronics America. "Not only do we enable customers to watch dramatically improved analog television images through our proprietary DiamondDigital Pixel Multiplier(TM) technology, we also have developed the most flexible architecture in a television chassis. This architecture, using our High-Definition Interface(TM), enables consumers to upgrade their television to true HDTV performance now or in the future. Customers will be able to adopt HDTV at their pace, without fear of obsolescence in today's Mitsubishi purchase." Mitsubishi Consumer Electronics America, best known for its big screen technology, is leveraging that hallmark with the best in both the HD and SD digital worlds and the high-performance analog world. According to Bob Perry, MCEA's director of marketing: "HDTV is best experienced on big screens, and big screens have been our strength for 20 years. The dramatic improvement in resolution for both digital images and analog images enhanced by Mitsubishi's DiamondDigital Pixel Multiplier(TM) means that consumers can comfortably sit closer to larger screens. This will drive customers to purchase larger screens and increase sales demand." Perry believes dealers will be very pleased with what MCEA has accomplished because it places the company at the leading edge of the analog to digital transition. "Dealers can now demonstrate the differences between true HDTV and its imitators, while selling products that are not going to become obsolete in a year or two," Perry continued. "For consumers who understand that analog television sources will be around for many years to come, our DiamondDigital Pixel Multiplier(TM) process improves the apparent resolution of analog sources to high definition levels, thus extending the life cycle of that technology." Other MCEA products shown today -- a new line of VCRs, a second-generation DVD player, "Theater in a Box", WebTV(R) Plus, AV receivers, speakers and subwoofers -- all interface to the new line of TV sets and offer unprecedented opportunities for dealers. "Pictures and sounds from these products are presented with an advanced range of clarity for the ultimate in home entertainment," Perry said.
