Lucent Adds Advanced Switching Features to Networking Products Las Vegas, May 7 (Bloomberg) -- Lucent Technologies Inc. soon will add new switching features to a line of its computer networking equipment, adding key capabilities as it pushes into a market now dominated by Cisco Systems Inc. Lucent expects to ship so-called Layer-3 switching cards for its P550 router next month, said Debra Deutsch, product manager for the company's data networking systems unit. The router is used by large businesses to move data along computer networks and onto the Internet. Corporations want Layer-3 switches because they are faster than existing switches and allow for more sophisticated network management. The market for such equipment is expected to reach more than $1 billion annually within three years as businesses expand their networks to handle growing Internet data traffic. ''This is the kind of product the (corporate) enterprise market wants right now,'' said Craig Johnson, an analyst with the PITA Group in Portland, Oregon. Murray Hill, New Jersey-based Lucent, which traditionally has sold voice switching equipment to phone companies, is looking to the networking market as the growth of voice traffic has slowed this decade. It acquired Layer-3 technology when it bought Prominet Corp. for $200 million in stock in December. Last month Lucent agreed to pay $1 billion for Yurie Systems Inc., which makes equipment used by Internet service providers to route calls. Lucent now sells a line of Layer-3 switching products made by Bay Networks Inc. Lucent spokesman Stephen Loudermilk said the company will continue selling Bay's Accelar product line, even though the new version of the P550 is aimed at the same market niche as one of the Accelar configurations. While Lucent's development of its own Layer-3 product is not a huge blow to Bay, ''it's not great news for them,'' said Scott Heritage, an analyst with UBS Securities who rates Bay ''hold.'' Bay had Accelar sales of around $40 million to $60 million last quarter, with only a small part of that coming from sales through Lucent, Heritage said. A spokesman for Bay said there was no change in the company's resale agreement with Lucent. Johnson said one of the strengths of the P550 is its scalability, which means that like the Accelar and competing products from Cisco, it can be expanded to fit into many different-sized networks. A small number of the Layer-3 cards will be shipped to Lucent customers ''within weeks'' for testing. Barring technical problems, the cards will ship in volume in June, Deutsch said. The Layer-3 equipped P550 was demonstrated by Lucent at the Networld+Interop trade show in Las Vegas. o~~~ O
