Trying to ignore the panic... some thoughts on modem sales....

I was in a large chain computer store last night, buying a monitor (MicroCenter on the north side of Chicago, to be exact), and, as always, asked the sales guys I was talking with how 3Com sales were recently.

One of their comments was of interest: They said that most new computers were shipping with 56K modems already installed, which is the reason they believed that they had not seen a massive pickup in sales of ANY brand of modems even with the V.90 announcement. If this is true, we should be looking more at OEM modem deals (at which 3Com has done pretty well) more than the retail channel, for indicators in desktop modem sales.

As for the PalmPilot, it's still selling very well, and (I pressed on this) they don't see it losing much to the new WinCE devices... at least so far... although the publicity has stirred up some interest among nerdly types at least.

Not that consumer stuff represents the whole of the business by any means... and that there isn't plenty of other things to study.

Best,

Dick
