All,

From OS Rumors:

Sources have confirmed that the video system on the iMac is indeed an ATI Rage II system with 64-bit 2D and 3D acceleration.

Man this machine is such a big deal! I had my doubts about their net computer but this is amazing!!! They totally did it right. Don't worry about floppies. They are as dead as 12" floppies. USB is cross platform. Zip drives are cheap as dirt, and believe me they are ubiquitous. If you add up what you get in terms of software and hardware this is a totally amazing deal. Near revolutionary. Maybe revolutionary. You have pretty much what you need to run a business. Enough power to have a small graphics business. Great net machine. Fast as the dickens and easy to upgrade anything else you need on USB. The only thing that worries me is the delay until it is available. I hope they can get it out sooner. I'm still gonna wait for the godzilla box though.

ThessaSource:

Mac OS systems maker MacTell yesterday announced hardware acceleration for OpenGL forMacintosh through its line of lightning-fast Vision3D Pro II graphics cards. The clone maker now enables developers and end users like to tap into the graphics power of the Conix implementation of the OpenGL graphics standard with the speed Macintosh users deserve.

This is the last key for the Graphics industry. It almost guarantees one of the high end 3D software developers will port. It was the only argument in the graphics business against buying a Mac.

The real kicker in the Wall Street PowerBook is the 83-MHz logic board bus. Zowie!

----------

One of the last things that was bad about Macs was no good upgrade path but now I'm dumping a ProLogix board into my 150 for less than $500 and viol  275MGZ a G3 machine! I'm still gonna buy a biggie later though.

Those poor lemmings who shelled out for NT boxes are limping home in the rain now. The Celery chip just won't cut it competitively. Macs integration wins on the iMac.

Bill, the USB takes the place of serial and parallel ports. The hubs are powered 6 USB arrangements. USB is daisy chainable. I think the max is 24 devices theoretical. USB provides power as well as I/O so most devices except scanners for instance don't need separate power cords. I've read about some neat USB devices like a guitar teaching CD that comes with a USB enabled guitar. As it coaches you songs it has lights that appear where your fingers should be placed. USB devices should run the gamut of from scanners to storage, speakers, etc. Most companies were supposedly waiting till the release of Win 98 to launch their products since that's when USB will be fully enabled in the PC world.
