The $7 was operator assited day rate in the early 60's but of course there was no other way to call except operator assisted. also took about an hour to get hooked up, we would call the operator, request the call, and the operator would call back sometime later when the connection was made.
I only remember the price because I called my aunt as a 'surprise' on her birthday, and my dad 'surprised' me by making me pay for the call. I had a parer route at the time and it used up about 2 weeks profits to make a 5 minute call.
BTW I believe it was cheaper to call from Hawaii to the US than to call the other way. Apparently someone at the phone company had figured out that there were a lot more people on the mainland who might call back if they got a call from Hawaii so the rate from the island was kept lower to stimulate demand. Yet another example of monopoly in action.
