This might be, I always figured that Netscape was making the money on their server software which at that time ('94?) cost $5k. At first they were the only ones with a secure server, except for the mac which no one used. This was before NT could make it through the day without crashing. I think many ISP's used the free Apachy software, some kind of customized unix. Most still use it I believe.

I got nothing against either Netscape or MSFT giving their brouser away. But you gotta understand that giving away the source code is a higher level of giving it away. In a way it's making the program public domain.
