[thoughts on Dell/USwest/Cisco]

hi dog,

don't know how closely you have been following this, so forgive me if you know this stuff... but from your comments couldn't tell if you had hoped that orctf modems might be involved with uswest or that dell might be working with orctf... (or both)

if the former.. there never was a chance that orctf modems would be used for us west... as this is a separate deployment with other's equipment... and for now, there is no interoperability between one parties adsl modems and other's central office equipment... it will probably be a couple of years yet till the kinks get worked out... therefore til then, only csco modems for csco deployments, alcatel modems for alcatel deployments and fujitsu/orckit modems for fujitsu/orckit deployments...

as far as dell and orctf goes, it might have been nice, but as long as cpq is out there, we should probably not feel that badly... :) ...as there is potentially an oem deal at stake with compaq (along with the box set-up side) which wouldn't come with a dell relationship ...

generally would think the setup side on all these deployments to be pretty wide open... and for the most part not particularly exclusive... don't know why dell or any box maker for that matter, wouldn't be willing to setup their machines as required for csco adsl , alcatel adsl, fujitsu adsl etc..... so long as they stood a good chance @ enuf volume to make their profits... should be as simple as just adding a board (supplied by others) and a little code

in fact compaq already has such a deal with ameritech/alcatel... probably installing hayes modems with alcatel silicon in their presario line..

for an oem deal, one of the biggest fish out there as you pointed out is compaq...

believe cpq will definitely partner with someone... as they don't have their own xdsl... they sell modems directly (they bought Microcom) and of course nics... they are showing great interest in g.lite... they are working on expanding into international markets... and last, but not least integrated high speed internet access is an integral component of their small office and home networking strategy...

therefore am pleasantly surprised that dell is working with cisco... if it were going to be netspeed/cisco for compaq, believe they would probably also be doing the box setup at this point.. in fact, it was predicted last october that compaq would be "partnering" with netspeed... before cisco bought netspeed... looks less likely now

on the other side of the coin.. the silence is significant (i hope) from fujitsu/orctf... would guess we'll be hearing something eventually (for both setup and an oem) , as orctf has made it clear they are not interested in the consumer side... and gte has already said that other modems are not invited unless tech licensed from fuji/orctf

and gte is a big enuf deal that someone will be interested.... not only for simple $ , but gte could provide a headstart on the consumer market.. before interoperability is established... and gte/orctf/fujitsu will be involved in some of the aol adsl trials...

and if something comes thru overseas for orctf, the same party or parties would have that much bigger a market (same technology/same product)... and a headstart there as well...

also, to add spice... vdsl modems could be involved with orctf... way cool... and possibly the pr which could come with first g.lite into deployment... should orctf be on top of that one...

lots of players out there who could fit the bill for compaq...in some combination... but only one i can think of who could be a one stop shop for adsl/vdsl silicon, adsl/vdsl expertise, g.lite, and quite probably usa and international exposure to early deployments... and is looking for a just such a partner...

would think a lot could hinge on this next generation of orctf silicon... whether cpq will be involved only time will tell... and two silences don't necessarily make a match, but til we hear something from either cpq or orctf that points in other directions, am choosing to see the glass as half full... or something like that

best o luck
