In other words, the errors were not made in the past year so much as they were made around ten years ago.
I am in violent agreement with your point #4. I will go further and say that the remnants of that mind set among the 'old guard' CPQ management are responsible for a large part of CPQ's current problems, and that the 'channel stuffing' model also comes from that time. Your point is very insightful and people who know the cultural issues at CPQ could learn a lot by investigating the logical consequences of that statement.
My original argument was that the recent 1Q (and current 2Q) problems are a result of a deep rooted effort to change that model, not a symptom of some new disease. BTW look to see a lot of the CPQ 'old guard' become casualties of the DEC merger, not all of the cuts will come from DEC. There is a lot more to the reasoning behind the DEC merger than the simplistic analysis of 'pooling of interest' or 'filling in the gaps' that has been put out in the press.
