info from Wilson Sonsini's Spring 1998 Life Sciences Bulletin (I'm typing this in, guys):

1997 figures

VC funds invested in Biopharmaceuticals: $741.5M, 118 deals

Top 5 Biopharmaceutical Financings:

Company Amt $M Business

Tularik 55.0 Drug discovery based on regulating gene expression
Ontogeny 25.0 Utilizes developmental biology for drug discovery
Sensus 23.4 Biotech firm researching diabetes and cancer
Diversa 21.0 Develops enzymes for industrial processes
Rosetta 17.5 Develops biochip technology for drug discovery

Top 5 first time Biopharmaceutical financings

Rosetta 17.5 Develops biochip technology for drug discovery
Invitrogen 15.0 Molecular biology reagent kits for gene cloning and expression research
Coulter Cellular 14.7 Develops therapeutic products for cancer patients
Variagenics 12.1 Utilizes genetic variations to develop anti-cancer drugs
Kinetix 10.0 Develops small molecular weight pharmaceuticals that inhibit protein kinase

They also have a listing of the top life sciences funders in 1997, in terms of number of deals per VC. There's a lot of noise in the data, since they've included medical devices and healthcare services and software, but the top 3 were New Enterprise Associates, Sprout Group, and Domain (Domain for you BVF thread followers).

The VD Group didn't make the top ten ...

Rick, thanks for sharing this priceless piece. Sometimes I wonder why I spend (waste?) time on these threads at all. Well, this post reminded me of why it is worth wading through a good deal of noise to find real insight.

Rick, I don't know if you noticed that there is a lot of cancer hype.(:>) I would like to start looking at the neuro area. I can find company names no problem. I had a relative suffer from AD and figured I'd start there. Would you be kind enough to give me a list of some researchers who are doing interesting things in this area? Thanks and regards, squetch
