Michael, I agree with you totally. Many of Merck's and Glaxo's major drugs would be off patent before the year 2000, and I believe LLY's Prozac would be off patent in 2002. I still have faith in LLY's Evista's potential. Talking about undervalued pharma, I've read that J & J and Pharmacy & Upjohn as well as Monsanto are good buys on weakness, but then, like you I don't have that much money to invest, so I stick with a few good ones. My 12 month target for PFE is a conservative one - $150 (because I want to be pleasantly surprized if it manages to exceed my target price).

Mexico says will block Viagra imports for now
Friday May 8, 7:26 pm Eastern Time

MEXICO CITY, May 8 (Reuters) - Mexico will block imports of the new impotence drug Viagra until there is more proof that it works, the country's health minister said on Friday.

''For now we are not going to register it (as a legal drug) because it is not a medicine that has shown effects of improving male impotence,'' Health Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente told the government news agency Notimex.

Thousands of men in the United States would disagree, saying the prescription medicine developed by New York-based Pfizer Inc. (PFE - news) has improved their sex lives. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March.

Health experts in Mexico also have warned men in this heavily macho society against gobbling Viagra, stressing that it is drug for a specific medical condition and won't improve the sexual prowess of men who achieve an erection normally.

De la Fuente, quoted by Notimex in Barcelona, where he was attending an international health conference, said Viagra ''appears to be beneficial in some cases'' but urged caution because the drug was not a ''magic pill.''

The government already has warned pharmacies in Mexico -- where all manner of prescription drugs are available over the counter -- against selling Viagra to people without a prescription.

''Medicine used indiscriminately can have harmful effects on health,'' de la Fuente said.

MRK drug reps haven't been around the hospital lately, maybe they're laying off employees in anticipation of year 2000
