I have a suspicion that we will eventually have an
Internet crisis. Consolidation or whatever will happen
to solve the problem, creating a BOOM time for Internet
expansion. That's what I'll be preparing for!!!

AOL and AT&T have already had their first catastrophes. The threat of overload is no longer theoretical.

In response to the need for bigger pipes and faster connections, there were several key announcements this week:

USWest teamed with Qwest for long distance:

GTE is suing MCI-WorldCom because their merger will give them 60% control of the Internet backbone.

BT, FT, C&W, NTT, and SingTel, announced they're adding their support to Universal ADSL.

BellSouth announced it's ready to follow USWest's lead:

NN said it's providing Global Management Services Platform for AT&T:

There's a lot happening and CIEN's just one of the beneficiaries.

Later --

Pat

>Random Musings:> more--
Yup, Internet "doom and gloom" was a favorite subject for Bob
Metcalfe a couple of years back. (Metcalfe was an original ethernet
developer and a founder of 3Com). He predicted its death on many
many occasions. It survived and prospered-and so did the companies
that helped it grow with innovative technology. Those innovations
continue, DWDM as one example for this particular thread.

Internet growth is extrordinary and there are many drivers--Its
collapse is not immenent but folks like Vint Cerf think that even
all the new photonic stuff, like DWDM, won't be sufficient.
