For those who are interested, transcript (Viagra part) of the Dole interview on Larry King Live: KING: One of the proudest moments I ever had was walking with you at the Republican convention in Houston. This was 1980 -- no, 1992 I guess. DOLE: Ninety-two. KING: Ninety-two. And a man came up to both of us and said, "you guys saved my life. You asked him about prostate cancer. He told me about taking the test. I took the test. I had the early stages. I had the operation. I owe you my life." We almost cried. DOLE: That's right. KING: What do you make of our advances in this area, and what do you make of Viagra? DOLE: Well I wish I'd have bought stock early. KING: No, I mean, this is a great drug. DOLE: Great drug, and I think... KING: Have you ever -- were you ever... DOLE: I'll be honest, I was in the protocol and participated in the program, but... KING: Wow. You can help us then. DOLE: I don't know about... KING: Everyone's saying that it's a great drug. Is it a great drug? I mean... DOLE: I think it's an effective drug and I think we need to, you know, learn more about it depending on what your problem may be. Sometimes if it's -- you have what they call a prostatectomy where it's removed surgically, it may not be as effective, but there are many men out there, millions of men, who suffer from impotence, and this may be the first step. KING: Now, when you're in the protocol, they give it to you and then they give you -- they test you with... DOLE: They give you -- you've not really getting placebo or... KING: You don't know what you're getting... DOLE: ... the real thing, yeah. KING: Are you surprised at how much it's selling? DOLE: Not really. I mean, I think there's people are calling in -- doctors have stamps now, I mean, their hands are worn out from writing prescriptions. DOLE: You're the most famous member of that protocol. Did you -- are you completely cured of the cancer now? I mean, does this... DOLE: Yes. My -- what my so-called PSA is negligible -- zero. KING: Zero? DOLE: And I think I'd just say to men who may be watching, if you're 40 years old you better get that PSA test... KING: It ain't nothing but a... DOLE: ... Early detention is the name of the game, just the same as with breast cancer. And we still have our Bob Dole screening booth at the state fair in Kansas every year. And we screen about 2 or 3,000 men, and maybe somebody's helped. KING: Thank God for Dr. Patrick Walsh, too. DOLE: Patrick Walsh, and David McLeod, Colonel David McLeod of Walter Reed Hospital and many others. KING: And Michael Milken's doing a... DOLE: Done a great job. cnn.com
