Our October, 1997 rating of shopping.com was accurate...

"Discount mail order" via the web. Started sales via the Internet July 11, 1997. Very broad product offering, no specialization, nothing proprietary. Mission is to be the low-priced leader - which means low profit margins, such as a 9% gross margin based on test sales. Pilot program began in September in Austin, Texas with CitySearch, an important strategic partner. High "burn rate" with almost 50 employees.
