Intel originally sampled a 0.6 micron version of the i740 - and it generated a lot of heat.

When the "media" found out about it, that was all they could talk about - the heat dissipation. Many bashed it for that reason alone.

They never anticipated the OBVIOUS - that Intel would redesign the part on a 0.35 micron process to reduce the heat and increase performance.

So, look at the DATE of the reviews - if it preceded the actual i740 launch, most likely the article was tunnel-visioned on the the orginal, 0.6 micron part.
