What the world is only beginning to realize is the incredible fraility of most software.

Gene,>>> DJ10K BUG COULD CRASH COMPUTERS <<<

That is a phoney story. Numeric fields exceeding the highest number provided by a programmers definition happens all the time . This rarely crashes a computer system. Most of the time, the only consequence is that the wrong number shows up. Programmers make mistakes all the time.

A programmer for a bank for example would set up a field for an account balance not to exceed $9,999,999,999.99. The only thing that happens when Bill Gates opens an account in this bank would be that he loses $40B. No big deal. The world does not come to an end.

DJ10K would be similar. Any program using the DJ for derivative calculations will be fixed in ten minutes - and maybe it would take 10 hours to fix all the programs in the world that would be effected.

Y2k, however, is completely different (because of the size and scope) - is a real problem. About $600B worth. DJ10K is bs.
