>>My understanding is that there is already a shortage of bandwidth, if these technologies are rapidly deployed then where will the bandwidth come from?

There are three pieces that pertain to bandwidth.

The server - the computer that delivers the content, such as SI.

The backbone - the "highway" that transports the data from the server to the Point of Presence that you connect to (the local telco or cable company).

The last mile - the telco pair or neighborhood cable run that connects to your house.

Cable modems and xDSL expand the last piece. As that blossoms, there will be continued pressure to add capacity to the other two legs. As long as the consumer demand is there, they will continue to expand (add capacity) as well.

Jeff there is a company called 3Com which knows a bit about xDSL and the local loop (last mile) which has a wealth of information available...the link to 3Com is the first one below...I've also added a couple more. These should answer your question and show where much fo the focus will be in the near future for increasing access speed & downloads to/from the 'Net.
