And you would be wrong. Dell's margins have held steady at 22% for the last few quarters. Compaq's use to be somewhat higher, but I understand the latest quarter figures are 18%.

Now these are the margins of two of the best and most successful computer manufacturers. If Apple could hold margins at 23%, I'd say they would be doing a terrific job.

I can't quote specifics without doing a lot of searching, but I seem to recall reading that Compaq's margins on these low end systems were somewhere around 16%. But I remember that a zec from Compaq claimed that, due to the out-sourceing, the overhead was negligible.
