Viagra has had only limited success in 25% to 40% of all prostatectomy patients. Most patients who have had a prostratectomy lose part (or all ) of their smooth muscle function; this muscle is what Viagra relaxes so the blood can flow into penis and produce an erection.
If Viagra gives Bob Dole a rise, he would be considered one of the fortunate few prostactectomy patients that Viagra helps.
If Bob Dole didn't loan Newt Gringrich $300,000 he might of had some funds to buy PFE with. We all make stupid investments at some point in time and I guess the Bobster's no exception.

Two things besides Viagra are at play in this interview.

One, Bob and Larry are talking about erections on television. This is not a living room conversation. Bob stutters a bit, Larry interrupts a bit, it's all a little rushed.

Two, Bob's there to talk about prostate cancer and screening when this other subject comes up. Bob is comfortable helping the world with one medical problem, and perhaps uncomfortable helping the world with another.

Given the conflicting agendas, it's not too surprising he comes across as stilted.

Then add the fact that Bob always comes across as stilted.

I saw some of it on CNN. It didn't look rehearsed. In fact, it looked very much like the conversations about Clinton's sex life when Tripp made the tapes. People like Peter Jennings as much as said, "I'm really uncomfortable discussing this on television." (paraphrase)

A prostatectomy can also cause damage to neurons that supply neurotransmitter to the smooth muscle tissue that Viagra acts on. That is why the success rate is so low in patients who have had prostatectomies.
