Try running the Zip diagnostics program, including scan disk. A few weeks back while transporting my parallel port external (I use it with a ZipUp PCMCIA card for my laptop--which, by the way, works great!) I dropped the drive about 2.5 feet onto a carpeted floor.

Thereafter, the drive clicked a few times while I was accessing Zip data. I thought I had ruined the drive, and that I was experiencing COD. In playing around trying to determine whether it was a disk problem or a drive problem, I came across the IOM diagnostic program. It's actually pretty cool, you can determine whether your drive has a problem; it also provides detailed information on the particular Zip disk (what's a "Julian" date?)

Anyway, scan disk is one of the options (as well as defrag). I ran scan disk and although the disk/drive hung up in a couple of spots, with a clicking "engage/disengage" sound, the program made it through to the end.

I have been using that disk and six others on a daily basis and have not had another round of clicking on either the external parallel or my desktop IDE internal drive. Additionally, none of my data has been corrupted and, obviously, using that disk had not destroyed either drive.

Give it a try--if either the drive or the disk has already appeared to have gone south, you've got nothing to lose!
