Stitch, I think that our esteemed professor is missing a major ingredient in the renewal of the US economy in the last 20 years, wide availability of risk capital. Europe has learned this lesson and are now building an infrastructure of VC, but Japan and the rim in general are still way behind. I mentioned this in an earlier post, of all the major Japanese corporations, only Sony was formed after the war and outside the keiretsu (SP) system. In the United States, I cannot even keep up with the 30 Dow companies they change so rapidly, but more importantly, probably a good 20% of the fortune 100 where born post World War II. In another 20 years, I would not be surprised if this number reaches 50%. Innovation without risk capital behind it is infertile.
