Just like clock work:
TOKYO and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- VeriSign Japan K.K. (www.verisign.co.jp), a subsidiary of VeriSign, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRSN) -- the world's leading provider of digital certificate solutions -- today announced that it is providing VeriSign E-Commerce Solutions(SM), and Global Server IDs(SM) to the Sumitomo Bank to enhance the security of Sumitomo's Internet Banking services. The Sumitomo Bank will issue its own branded certificates to customers world wide in June, 1998. With this, customers will be able to access their bank accounts over the Internet, transfer funds, and take other measures to manage their money with the confidence that their financial transactions are secure. "Sumitomo Bank, having started its Internet Banking services in January 1997, has recognized that Internet security is a basic need for superior customer service. We have been doing our best to offer the highest security possible," said Yoshiaki Izumida, general manager, electronic commerce banking department of the Sumitomo Bank. "We chose VeriSign because they offer one of the highest levels of digital certificate solutions today. With their certificate solution, we can offer a much more advanced Internet service to meet our customers' needs." VeriSign Japan will offer its E-Commerce Solutions to Sumitomo Bank to help them realize the benefits of worldwide customer service over the Internet. VeriSign's E Commerce Solutions -- powered by VeriSign OnSite(SM) -- is the industry's only distributed PKI architecture which provides enterprises with a suite of software and services designed to secure all of their e-commerce applications, including intranets, extranets and Internet commerce. These solutions eliminate the need for corporations to invest heavily in expensive software, hardware, personnel and operating facilities, while providing the power and scalability to issue and manage digital certificates in the millions. VeriSign E-Commerce Solutions allow organizations to get up and running more quickly and at a far lower cost than if they were to purchase or build a do-it-yourself solution. VeriSign Japan is also providing its Global Server IDs(SM) for 128-bit secure communications. VeriSign was the first Certificate Authority to provide 128-bit Digital IDs which comply with the Federal export regulations. The Sumitomo Bank is the first Japanese bank to enable 128-bit encrypted communications in a large-scale online banking offering. "Sumitomo Bank leads the Japanese financial services industry by promising secure online communications and transactions for their customers," said Koji Kodama, president of VeriSign Japan K.K. "Using digital certificate solutions, online banking customers will be able to trust in their online banking services." The Sumitomo Bank obtained its Secure Server ID from VeriSign Japan's Digital ID Center in January 1997 and Sumitomo has been continuing to develop its security solutions. By installing VeriSign OnSite, the Sumitomo Bank issues the certificates to customers via Web browsers to mutually authenticate transactions. The Web server reads the customers' digital certificate through the browser and offers access control depending on the type of transaction. Moreover, the communication between the Sumitomo Bank server and the customer's browser is encrypted with a VeriSign Server ID, which offers a high level of security for online financial transactions. "We're very pleased that Sumitomo Bank, one of the largest banks in the world, selected VeriSign's state-of-art E-Commerce Solutions to help them get started in implementing their online banking solution," said Stratton Sclavos, president and CEO of VeriSign, Inc. "US-based banks including Bank of America, Federal Reserve Bank of NY and NationsBank are providing valuable services to their customers using VeriSign Digital IDs. Due to Japanese acceptance of value-add services and the use of technology, we are confident that many world-class global financial institutions will implement digital certificates for higher security."
