>>Remember on May 25, 1961 President John F. Kennedy announced to the nation a goal of sending an American safely to the Moon before the end of the decade. It was successfully accomplished on July 20, 1969.<<

Yes, but when Apollo 13 malfunctioned NASA faced the ultimate time-critical deadline. There was no time to re-design the system or send up a replacement. They had to resort to a bailing-wire/duct-tape "quick fix" solution.

I'm not sure our attitudes are really that far apart. As an experienced programmer who likes a challenge, my inclination is to role up my sleeves and do something about this Y2K problem rather than fret about it. But we really seem to differ at the tactical level. Earlier you said: "Fixing antique software and computer systems makes no sense to me." I'm just trying to help you understand why this isn't always practical.

Each situation must be handled on an individual basis. New system conversions are notorious for time and cost delays, and that is why many DP managers will opt to fix existing systems.
