Everybody is trying to guess who Lucent will buy when they can use their shares. (Could it be Ascent? Maybe Bay? Perhaps Nokia? Possible 3Com? Even little DSPG? Or .... the possibilities are numerous) If you're thinking about buying shares in a company solely for the purpose of a possible take-over, You're thinking more like a gambler than an investor. Suppose you buy shares in a company, and Lucent decides to buy their competitor. Then you're stuck with a company that is even less competitive. Instead of trying to second guess Lucent, why not buy more Lucent? It's a given that Lucent will step-up their acquisitions once they are free to use their shares, and you can sure management will carefully decide which company will best improve Lucent's performance. It seems like a no-brainer to me - Don't gamble, buy Lucent.
