Gene, naked short selling on the part of a MM is not illegal....it is certainly unethical...but as long as the MM has the capital standing to handle his short positions, he can do it with impunity.

That's the problem....the legitimate investor who listens to the hype and has no facts (hard numbers) by which to place a fair value on the stock, is forced to buy into the hype and the rising volume. It's a damn poker game, and everybody knows, in advance, who will hold the losing hand. If you can't find out what it's worth, how do you know when the price is fair or unfair?

You can't know....and that's what gives the MM's the edge....and makes suckers of the little guys over, and over, and over.
