GM Maintains Export Sales Lead in 1998

DETROIT, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors (NYSE: GM)
continued to lead in the number of vehicles it exports to
world markets from the United States and Canada.

GM reported export shipments of 45,692 vehicles in the first
quarter of 1998. Ford was second with 39,344 vehicles followed
by Chrysler with 27,309 vehicles. GM's 1998 first quarter
totals were an increase of 20.6 percent over its 1997 first
quarter totals and 23.8 percent ahead of the same quarter in
1996 reflecting a steady upward progression on a year-to-year
basis.

"GM's first quarter results and the upward trend over
the past several years are solid indicators that GM is
effectively competing on a global basis," said John Costin,
executive director, GM International Product Center. "We plan to
step up our efforts to maintain our export sales lead and expect
substantial increases with the introduction of our new full-size
pickup and the launches of our right-hand-drive Cadillac Seville
and Chevrolet Blazer and Suburban in a number of international
markets."
