Interesting article from Sun's home page on up-front purchase costs vs. NT.

"...The ProLiant 7000, Compaq's high-end server, competes with the Sun
EnterpriseTM 450 server, whose U.S. list price is $14,650. An entry-level, single processor Enterprise 450 has 128MB of memory and a 4GB disk drive system. In contrast, a similarly configured Compaq ProLiant 7000 has an estimated street price of $17,600. Therefore, instead of a 60 percent price advantage, Compaq ProLiant vs the E450 carries a 20 percent price premium. "
