GREEK DEFENSE MINISTER SAYS KOSOVO COULD IGNITE WAR WORSE THAN BOSNIAMay 11, 1998ÿAkis Tsohatzopoulos, the Greek Defense Minister, said yesterday at a Western European Union meeting, "Kosovo can turn into a crisis worse than Bosnia. This problem can have immediate and grave consequences to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia with its large ethnic Albanian minority and of course Albania. The refugee wave will be the least of our problems. We are talking about another kind of conflice, a big conflict unless this thing is settled the proper way from the start."

He went on to chide the EU for inaction and said that a possible war would be worse than any conflict experienced in the Balkans since the fall of communism. He said, "The EU is developing into a global economic power through economic and monetary union and it is inconceivable not to have a decisive role and participation in global security matters. The EU has done far too little in Kosovo and we must try harder to solve this delicate problem."
