On the subject of software distribution, 1. The internet is the preferred method for software companies. It is the cheapest. However, most people I know still have a want or "need" for that hard copy. Therefore, Software companies will continue to distribute by other mediums (at a higher cost) to meet this "need". 2. Distribution by CDs is NOT preferred to 1.44 floppies. 1.44 floppies are still cheaper than CDs. I have never seen a single group of files that would fit on a 1.44 shipped on CD. For that matter i have never seen less than 1.44 distributed on a CD. 3. Zip disks are terrible for software distribution, of the four methods mentioned in this post it is way most expensive. The same can be said about LS 120 disks and Sony HiFD disks, if they ever become a reality. But I don't think that is the area which Zip targets, never has been. 4. The distribution of software is growing for the internet and CDs and shrinking for the 1.44s. Why, because Executable and Command programs are getting too large for 1.44s. Even if 1.44s are free, the time, packaging and shipping of them is not. 5. With these programs growing larger and larger, the files that they create are getting larger and larger. With Windows 95 and 98 the overhead is also getting larger and larger. This is the area that high-capacity floppies are targeting. 6. This is the reason that the LS 120, (aka A:drive, aka Surperdisk and now once again the LS 120) has not given up. If the market for high capacity market was shrinking they would have cut their losses and moved on (like Syquest). 7. This is the same reason Sony presses on. JW
