It's like this: Let's say I post something, and then decide within the 15 minute window allowed for editing that it sounded stupid. So I hit edit, and wipe out the message, which now exists as a blank message. Within about 24 hours, SI's clever robot pays a visit, deleting this blank message, and moving up the pointers to subsequent messages. That's it. No conspiracy.
