Mike, while I appreciate an Idahoan acknowledging that the camo crowd is a little scary, I think you might have some incorrect assumptions about the "bomb tossing lefty tree huggers from the Bay Area". I don't believe in violent protest, and am certainly not advocating the tactics of EarthFirst, which as far as I know is the ONLY environmental group which has done anything at all violent. I have read all sorts of articles about them, and believe that the bomb which exploded in their leader's car was planted, and that she and her passenger were crime victims. This group did stud trees with shrapnel, but always warned loggers away from the trees that were studded. The intent was clearly to prevent the logging of old growth redwoods, not to hurt anyone. All the loggers who were injured who I ever heard about had been informed that they were in danger, and probably should not have tried to chop down those precious ancient trees. I think it is sort of unfair to smear the entire environmental movement, which is almost totally nonviolent, by lumping them together with EarthFirst. I do find it strange that the militia movement and many of the conservative Christians are so hostile to the environmental movement, however. The tree huggers are almost all from the Eureka area of northern California, which is about six hours north of the Bay Area. And I have never heard of a bomb being tossed by them, although I do remember some really sickening news footage of the tree huggers having pepper spray applied directly to their pried open eyes by the sheriffs at a demonstration near Eureka. I hope they all make a whole bunch of money as the result of the lawsuits which have been filed, because it is illegal and immoral to use pepper spray that way. On the other hand, the militia movement is heavily armed, involved in violent hate crimes against Jews, homosexuals, and racial minorities, and of course Timothy McVeigh murdered hundreds of people in a flash with his bomb. So I really think they are a LOT more scary than the tree huggers, who are at least trying to do a good and loving thing. Have you been over at Feelings before? If not, welcome. Is there anything you would like to discuss?
