DSC to Provide SDH Network Connecting Norway and the U.K. for NorSea Com

DALLAS, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- DSC Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: DIGI) announced today that the company has been awarded a contract by NorSea Com, the Norwegian company owned 50/50 by Enitel and Telia. The contract calls for DSC to supply optical transmission equipment for use in an SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) undersea network connecting Norway with the U.K. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The DSC FOCUS AC4 optical transmission system will connect the terminal stations in both countries via five offshore platforms in the North Sea. The total system length is more than 900 km with two fiber pairs equipped. The longest of the six spans is 275 km. The initial system capacity of 2.5 Gbps can be upgraded by a factor of more than eight when the capacity demand increases. This means that the initial fully protected 30,000 channels can be expanded to more than 250,000 channels by means of DSC technology available today.

Harald Nordgard, chief executive officer of NorSea Com, commented: "Our newly established NorSea Com has chosen the most up-to-date and compact technology for the backbone link for our international operation. This fulfills the demand for high-capacity growth without getting into space problems on the platforms. At the same time, NorSea Com's network traffic will be fully protected and managed by the proven DSC FOCUS NM2100 network management system."

Mike Myers, vice president, DSC Communications A/S, said: "We are very proud of winning this important contract as the first SDH supplier to the new and fast-moving NorSea Com. Being an approved supplier for offshore platform applications requires consistently high-quality products. This contract draws on our expertise in offshore platforms, as well as our industry-leading position in high-capacity, long-distance transmission platforms."

Chairman Jan Morten Ruud of NorSea Com, said: "NorSea Com has been tasked by our owners to establish this high-capacity international link in the shortest possible time frame. That is why I am happy today having selected DSC as a very responsive technology supplier. DSC is tasked with installing and commissioning the link before the end of 1998 in accordance with the strict rules on the offshore platforms."
