Top Telecoms Join Group To Speed Up Internet Access - NYT

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The world's largest telecommunications companies have agreed to join a U.S. group that seeks to speed up modem connections to the internet, The New York Times reported Monday.

The newspaper said British Telecommunications (BTY), Deutsche Telekom (DT), France Telecom (FTE), Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) and Singapoore Telecommunications (P.SGT) have joined the organization, known as the Universal ADSL Working Group.

It said ADSL stands for asymmetric digital subscriber line, a technology that is claimed to allow consumers to connect to the internet up to 30 times faster than the most advanced modems currently available.

The group was formed in January by Compaq Computer (CPQ), Intel Co. (INTC), Microsoft Co. (MSFT) and the six largest local telephone companies in the U.S.
