SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 11, 1998--Ligos Technology, developers of multimedia technologies and applications for digital video recording and navigation, announced today the latest version of its award-winning LSX-MPEG Encoder. LSX-MPEG Encoder 2.0 utilizes Intel's MMX technology and Ligos Technology's patent-pending Lightspeed motion estimation algorithm to provide the fastest software solution available for software-based MPEG-1/MPEG-2 encoding.

"LSX-MPEG Encoder 2.0 represents our commitment to providing best-of-breed MPEG-1/MPEG-2 software solutions and enabling technologies for all levels of personal computing," said Peter Forman, chief executive officer, Ligos Technology. "We shipped our LSX-MPEG Encoder 1.0, the first software encoder to provide compression for both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video, in August 1997. LSX-MPEG Encoder 2.0 reaffirms our leadership in the market."

LSX-MPEG Encoder 2.0 is now 70 percent faster than LSX-MPEG Encoder 1.0 - making it the fastest MPEG-2 software encoder available. It transcodes source input format (SIF) resolution video-only clips in real-time -- 352x240 at 30 fps, on a 300MHz MMX Pentium II -- and it encodes multiplexed video/audio files at five percent faster than any other encoder available does.

At only $179.95 LSX-MPEG Encoder 2.0 is a fraction of the cost of expensive hardware solutions which typically cost thousands of dollars. LSX-MPEG Encoder 2.0 provides the small file sizes and low data rates users need from MPEG, more affordably, faster and better looking than ever before. LSX-MPEG Encoder 2.0 has added batch encoding, multiplexing, a preview function and enhanced predefined profiles to its already rich feature set.

"What we've been able to deliver is the speed and quality of a hardware solution at a fraction of the cost," said Richard Cowart, vice president of engineering, Ligos Technology. "The enhancements we've made to LSX-MPEG Encoder 2.0 make it the fastest MPEG-1/MPEG-2 software encoding solution available, with increased functionality for all levels of computing experience."

LSX-MPEG Encoder 1.0 was recently awarded a 1998 InfoVision award in the Multimedia category. The International Engineering Consortium's InfoVision Awards recognize technologies, products and applications displaying innovation, market impact, customer benefits and value to society. The IEC has over 50 years of distinguished service to the information industry and university communities.
