I get it now! Razor/Razor Blade analogy

I now understand Iomega's strategy with Zip. They are using the razor/razor blade model that made Gillette a powerhouse.

From all of the unsatisfied Iomega customer complaints and piles of refurbished drives sitting in stores, I conclude that Iomega's strategy is to sell as many crappy drives as possible, (razor blades) and sell 1 disc per drive (razor). Thus the need to send in faulty drives for refurbished ones, or repurchase brand new ones when the warranty expires.

Iomega's strategy is ingenious! Make 'em pay for drive after drive, just like Gillette's razor blades!

WTG, Iomega!
