This is from MacIntouch: Finally Jobs announced a strategy for Mac OS 10, which "takes the Mac OS into new territory," while bringing all the Mac OS app's with it. Apple examined the 8000 existing Mac API calls and eliminated 2000 that are "bad news," leaving 6000 "clean" API's. These 6000 API's, together with some new ones, are being packaged as "Carbon," the new Mac developer environment. Applications won't need to be rewritten but only to get a "ten-percent tune-up." Carbon also will run on Mac OS 8 (via a library), and it is targeted for G3 systems (including today's Macs). A "Carbon Data" analyzer will help developers determine the porting issues for their applications. This and preliminary Carbon specifications are available today. Mac OS 10, due for release in Q3 1999, will offer: 1.protected memory 2.virtual memory 3.pre-emptive multitasking 4.multi-threading 5.very fast networking 6.fast file I/O 7.fully PowerPC native Rhapsody will transition to Mac OS 10 after a Q3 1998 Rhapsody 1.0 release. Allegro, a.k.a. Mac OS 8.5, is due also in Q3 1998. Mac OS 8.6, an Allegro update, is due in Q1 1999.
