M2 PRESSWIRE-11 May 1998-SYMBIONICS: Digital television development boosts UK electronics industry (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

-- Cable & Satellite '98, Stand 571

BRITAIN is under close scrutiny from the rest of the world as the testing ground for digital terrestrial television services, a leading expert has claimed.

The world's electronic product manufacturers are turning to British companies for cutting-edge digital television technology, electronics design house Symbionics has revealed.

Symbionics will use the opening day of Cable and Satellite '98 as the setting to announce its work for three major product manufacturers. The company will demonstrate a working digital terrestrial TV set top box and a functional OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) de-modulator module, and discuss a digital TV reference design developed for a major IC manufacturer.

In addition to its work with product manufacturers, Symbionics has been retained by British Digital Broadcasting (BDB) as a consultant on the specification and implementation of open software standards for UK digital terrestrial television.

John Egan, Operations Director of BDB said: "The digital TV industry continues to make amazing progress towards the launch of digital terrestrial TV in the UK. Symbionics' important contribution is to provide rare expertise in what it takes to turn paper standards and specifications into real world consumer products. Symbionics has an impressive, all round design capability for digital TV."

Simon Jones, Symbionics business manager for digital television said: "At the moment there is some negative coverage of digital television in the consumer press but that is indicative of a high level of interest. Services will be launched later this year and product manufacturers who want a piece of the market are now working to tight deadlines to be ready for the launch.

"A reference design provides a low cost, low risk starting point for new product design. As time is now beginning to press, it is probably the best way to develop a digital TV product in time for early market entry.

"Because the UK will be the first country to start significant digital terrestrial services, British companies will be in the forefront of digital television development. The rest of the world will be watching closely to learn from our experiences."

NOTES TO EDITORS

Details of Symbionics' work with three major product manufacturers will be available from the press room at Cable and Satellite or by calling Jason Gowar at Peter Prowse Associates shortly before the show.
