Yes, I bought RDRT today and agree with your post. However, I don't expect to make money quickly here. We are pretty low at 10 3/8, but we could drift lower for the above reason. Plan on holding for a play on the DD sector. We 'might' see some more drift downward, I hope not, but their is always the other shoe.

<<Putting myself in the shoes of DD producers that compete head-to-head with IBM, I would certainly not want to put myself in a single-source situation with my competitor (buying heads only from IBM).>>

I agree that it isn't necessarily the position that I would want to be in. Unfortunately(for RDRT and APM), the IBM/WDC agreement does in fact have terms that state other head makers cannot compete for head supply on IBM designed DDs. The question is how many of the future DDs coming out of WD will be WD designs. It sounds to me like the majority will be IBM.

Robert;

<<Putting myself in the shoes of DD producers that compete head-to-head with IBM,I would certainly not want to put myself etc etc>>

I think your whole post which started with the above caption states the most articulate case for a RDRT investment that could exist. However, it would be a case for the bottom fishers which is a viable strategy, just not one I would use. I prefer to see value and I am concerned over the medium haul whether RDRT has value. I would feel a lot more comfortable with them if they had their arms around MR quals.
(Sorry for the delayed response..was away on a much needed break)
best,
