Trucker a hero in high-speed terror ride
Monday May 11 11:15 AM EDT

LONDON (Reuters) -- A British truck driver was hailed as a hero for
averting disaster when the accelerator jammed on his 38-ton vehicle
and triggered a 20-mile, high-speed terror ride on a motorway.

Quick thinking Michael Rayner, 26, alerted police on his mobile phone
as his articulated truck careened along the M1 motorway near London
Sunday at speeds of up to 80 miles an hour.

Police scrambled patrol cars and a helicopter to warn motorists in
the area and clear the motorway in front of the truck.

Rayner finally managed to turn the engine off and ram the truck into
a crash barrier near a normally busy roundabout.

No one was injured in the runaway drama.

"If there'd been a traffic jam of any kind then God only knows what
would have happened," police officer Jerry Bartlett told the Times
newspaper.

It was down to his expertise and his bravery.

Rayner told the Mirror: "The first few minutes were panicky. I was
terrified and felt very alone as I tried to avoid the cars."

He said the truck began speeding out of control when the accelerator
jammed.

"It went straight up into the red on the rev counter... I was doing
about 80 mph which is the most it will do," Rayner said.

"All this week I have been carrying cyanide and hydrochloric acid --
at least this time it was empty," he added.
