Hey, CGB!
Was this a recent article about the Walt Whitman School in Dallas? I haven't heard how it fared this year and I'd like to know. I know they opened with seven students last Sept, the first private school of its kind in the nation. The tuition is 7,000 year which is pretty steep, but they hope to get grants and scholarships. Two of the three founders had been teaching at hte Walden School, which caters primarily to LD and mild behavior problems, and they noticed how severely students teased the "different ones". They decided that there was a real need for a different setting for this high-risk population. They didn't even try to work with the Public Schools. (Probably a good decision). I'd love to know how the year went for the kids. My guess is in a warm, accepting environment, they learned far more than they ever could in public school, regardless of the lack of accreditation or teachers or anything else.
