"There is something cooking with Rhapsody -- $400 million for 1 release then back to a MacOS ?"

Rhapsody is NOT going away!!! All the NeXT technology is in MACOS X. Think of this transition as analogous to the 040-->PPC transition. A lot is happening under the cover, but those people who don't want to know about the changes don't have to. It's seamless. You can have the best of the current MacOS with the best of Rhapsody seamlessly (read: invisibly) built-in.

"It doesn't add up. I understand your concept of Jobs playing to the audience but here the attendees at this WWDC didn't clap!"

Right. Four possibilities here which are not mutually exclusive.

1. These folks have been so beat-up for so long that they were not going to be moved by anything short of a parting of the waters. While Mac OS X may turn out to be a miracle, it was not a flashy one."

2. Jobs underestimated the level of panic among developers, who may have been looking for a way to jump ship and develop for Wintel in a way that would still let them feel like they were not abandoning their roots. YB would do that, and Jobs didn't even mention it. (That doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, though."

3. Jobs was counting on the rest of the WWDC--including the YB boot camp--to carry the rest of the message.

4. Jobs has something else up his sleeve and wants to save the cross-compatibility message for a later event.

I strongly recommend you take a close look at Scott Anguish's coverage of the day:

This comes from an OpenStep developer who surely would be pissed if Apple were abandoning YB. Keep in mind, YB and Mach are the real revolution. Rhapsody is just a name.
