I guess I don't understand why they would try to borrow the stock and "short it" when all they have to do is exercise their in the money call and sell instantly. I know because I do this all the time when the option market maker is not giving me at least the "intrinsic" value on the bid price of the call option I'm long. There is no need to take assignment this way and no need to go into the market to borrow stock to short. I'm sure this is the way hedge funds do it also.
